Early Life

Gloria Tinubu was born on February 22, 1953 in Brookgreen Gardens, Georgetown County, South Carolina near Murrells Inlet, South Carolina. She grew up alongside seven other siblings born to her parents Beatrice and Charlie Bromell.

Education

In 1971, Gloria Tinubu graduated from Choppee High School and was later admitted into the University of South Carolina in Columbia for her freshman year as a Herbert Lehman Scholar.

She transferred to Howard University in 1974 and earned a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts with honors.

Gloria Tinubu became the first African-American woman to earn an MS in Agricultural Economics and Ph.D. in Applied Economics from Clemson University.

In 1986, Gloria Tinubu began her academic career as an assistant professor of economics at Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia. She later rose to the position of department chair and earned tenure as an associate professor in 1992.

Political Career

Bromell served on the Atlanta City Council, representing Council District 12, and later joined the Georgia State Assembly.

In 2012, she ran for Congress in South Carolina’s 7th congressional district, becoming the first African-American woman in the state to win her party’s nomination for Congress.

Bromell Tinubu later lost the election to the Republican party’s candidate Tom Rice.
