In a bid to ease the financial burden on the people of Edo State caused by the recent removal of fuel subsidies by the federal government, Governor Godwin Obaseki has announced a commendable initiative. Commencing on September 11, 2023, Edo City Transport Ltd (ECTS) will provide free transport services across all its routes in the state.

The free bus service will run daily from 6:30 am to 7 pm, benefiting a wide range of commuters. This initiative aims to address the mobility challenges faced by Edo State residents, thereby enhancing their overall welfare during these challenging times.

Andrew Okungbowa, Chief Press Secretary to the Edo State Governor, highlighted the governor’s compassionate decision, stating that it was a response to the difficulties arising from the fuel subsidy removal. Governor Obaseki’s directive covers an initial two-month period, offering free transportation within the Benin metropolis and connections to major cities across the state’s three senatorial districts.

According to Okungbowa, “It is hoped that this transportation support of the caring Governor will significantly reduce the citizens’ mobility problems and improve their welfare within this period.”

He also revealed that efforts are underway to procure new gas-powered buses for the state, underlining the government’s commitment to sustainable and efficient public transportation.
