Schools, Airports, Power Supply Shutdown as Labour Begins Nationwide Strike Today
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have commenced their industrial action today, June 3, 2024.
The strike is a result of the hike in electricity tariffs and a lack of consensus on a new minimum wage. Industries affected include schools, airports, hospitals, and power supplies.
This strike led to the shutdown of the national power grid. Causing nationwide blackouts.
Flight activities were affected at Port Harcourt Airport as early as 7:00 am. The airport workers under the Association of Nigerian Aviation Professionals (ANAP) and the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) restricted vehicles from gaining access to the airport.
States like Ogun, Oyo, Cross River, Edo, Imo, Lagos, and Kaduna have joined the strike.
In Kaduna, students of the Kaduna Polytechnic were locked out of the campus by labour officials. This happened as early as 7 am at the Unguwan Rimi Campus of the school.
