Amnesty International Condemns Rivers Govt Shut Down of AIT, Raypower

Amnesty International has condemned the River state government’s Siminalayi Fubara shut down of the operations of Africa Independent Television (AIT) and Raypower FM radio in Port Harcourt.

The human rights organization called the act of dismantling of masts and use of bulldozers to demolish the Transmitter Complex at the DAAR Communications Plc Broadcast Centre in Port Harcourt an utter contempt for the independent media.

According to a post by Amnesty International on X (formerly Twitter), this clampdown by Rivers state authorities is an attack on media freedom.

The organization also called on the Nigerian authorities to investigate this attack intended to send a chilling message that media and journalists need to self-censor or face dire consequences
