Anastrozole Overview
Anastrozole is a medication that generally reduces estrogen levels in women. It does this by blocking the enzyme aromatase. Aromatase converts testosterone into estrogen. It also reduces estrogen levels by binding to estrogen receptors and reducing the effects of estrogen on breast tissue. Estrogen promotes the growth of certain breast cancers, so anastrozole aims to delay cancer progression by inhibiting estrogen synthesis.
Anastrozole can be used to:
Treat hormone-sensitive breast cancer in postmenopausal women.
Reduce the risk of breast cancer in high-risk postmenopausal women.
Lower estrogen levels in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
Off-label use: Manage excess estrogen levels in men, particularly those with hypogonadism or gynecomastia.
By lowering circulating estrogen levels, anastrozole:
Slow cancer cell growth.
Shrink tumors.
Prevent cancer recurrence.
Improve symptoms like breast tenderness and swelling.
Foods To Avoid When Taking Anastrozole
Certain foods can interact with anastrozole, affecting its absorption, metabolism, or efficacy.
Grapefruit And grapefruit juice
Avoid consuming grapefruit products, as they may increase anastrozole levels, leading to adverse effects.
High-fat Foods
Consuming high-fat foods may reduce anastrozole absorption. Take the medication with a low-fat meal or snack to minimize this effect.
Soy Products
Soy may decrease anastrozole’s effectiveness. Limit or avoid soy-based foods, supplements, and phytoestrogen-rich products.
Calcium-rich Foods
Calcium may reduce anastrozole absorption. Take calcium supplements or consume calcium-rich foods at least 2 hours apart from anastrozole.
Vitamin K-rich Foods
Vitamin K may interact with anastrozoles. Moderate consumption of vitamin K-rich foods like leafy greens, fermented foods, and fatty fish is recommended.
