The Minimum Wage Tripartite Committee will start having daily meetings for five days with the hope of reaching a consensus and might consider N100,000 as National Minimum Wage. Sources within the labour movement who spoke with The Nation on Tuesday revealed that labour leaders were willing to shift ground from N494,000 demanded for by workers to the figure being contemplated by the Federal Government to avoid criticisms from some quarters that the demand was outrageous and unrealizable.

Yesterday, President Bola Tinubu gave a directive to Finance Minister and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun to make calculations regarding new minimum wage costs and provide figures which would be moderate, steady and make sense today.

The new minimum wage was initially proposed as N60,000 by the Federal Government but labour has vowed not to accept such an increment. A decision was reached between the Federal Government’s team and labour leadership on Monday for a new minimum wage set at “above N60,000”.
