Women Affairs Minister Disrupts Event in Abuja, Arrest Organisers

The Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, on Thursday stormed a women empowerment event organised by Mela-Chiyoma PAT Limited.

Uju took to the podium at the event and accused the organisers of impersonation. She also stated that the organisers had been arrested.

According to a video uploaded on X by the International Centre for Investigative Reporting (ICIR), the Minister was seen standing behind a banner that showed that the event was organised by Mela-Chiyoma PAT Limited.

The firm is an incorporated body in Nigeria with RC number 7029462 and registered on 23rd June 2023.

According to Uju, “I am standing here to explain to everyone that they (referring to the organisers) have been arrested. She should have used her name to make the invitation, not to use the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs. I can’t allow this programme to continue. I am sorry about it. Because this is pure impersonation, and the president is not happy about it.”

Recall that the Minister also made headlines barely four weeks ago, after nearly facing a physical confrontation with the House of Representatives Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development at the National Assembly Complex, Abuja.

The incident was caused by confrontations about the alleged diversion of N1.5 billion. The amount was meant for the payment of contractors by officials of the ministry.
